The 2019 football championship is likely to be another some of drama, passion and pride as all 32 counties bid to dethrone Dublin, who are looking for 5 in a row. It’s hard to back against them doing so either though they had poor league by their standards, they failed to reach league final for the first time since 2012.
Conor McManus was top scorer in the championship last year overall kicking 2-47 for the Farney men in Ulster, as well as their route to the Super 8’s. He is of course Malachy O’Rourke’s main man in attack and he will be expected to come up with the goods once again, He played 9 matches last year which works out on average 5.9 points per game. Something similar would see him go close to top scorer yet again. Another player I expect to be in the top two for scoring is Ballymun Kickhams and Dublin forward Dean Rock. He was second in the scoring charts last year behind McManus, but he played 2 games less. He only played 7 games, notching up 2-41, works out on average 6.7 points per game.
Sean O’Shea is a newcomer to the seen in terms of senior football but he impressed in the league for Kerry he was the player of the league in my opinion pulling off some outrageous scores. He will be the the free taker for sure, good from the ground and from hand also scores a couple of points from play in every game will certainly be up there. Peter Harte for Tyrone is another player that could push close to top scorer. He is an excellent free taker, scores some goals and is Tyrone’s key man in attack. A big year will be expected of him. Michael Murphy is another player that will be in the recknowing for sure, after a couple of games in the league he showed us how valuable he is to Donegal, he was the match winner against Armagh when sprung from the bench and he was also superb against Cork.
Cillian O’Connor is always there or thereabouts, he hasn’t featured in the league but he is likely to be back for championship. He averaged 7.75 points in 4 games last year. If he returns Mayo will be in with a massive shout come the Super 8’s. Other players I expect to feature are David Clifford, James O’Donoghue, Shane Walsh (Kerry), Ciaran Kilkenny and Conor McAliskey.
