The All-Ireland Championship in 2019 promises to be another exciting one with 6 or 7 teams once again all capable of taking home Liam McCarthy. With the Championship set to throw in on May 11th, (yes you read it correctly not long to go), we have decided to look who we think will be the top scorer in the championship.
Looking at least year Peter Duggan was the Championship top scorer with 3-76 for the Banner. Yes, he is of course the free taker, but to his credit he is a phenomenal player and he will be expected to have another big year in 2019, I expect him to be in the top 5 yet again for sure. Another player that was high on the list last year was Joe Canning he hit 2-78. He is the overall top scorer in championship history which says it all. Will be high on the list yet again. The top scoring charts are usually dominated by free scorers and TJ Reid will be probably high on the list also. The Ballyhale Shamrocks man hit 2-63 last season in the championship. He will need to have another massive year if Kilkenny are to win Liam McCarthy.
Cork’s Patrick Horgan is also a player I expect to be up in the running for top scorer. The Glen Rovers man hit 2-53 in the championship in 2018. He is the Rebels go to man in attack, when he is in song, Cork play well simple as. Aaron Gillane has had a good 2019 so far and he will also likely to be in top 5 or 6 scorers. He is an exceptional free taker, has a keen eye for goal and when on song is a match winner on his own. Stephen Bennett has been taking frees for Waterford in the league, with Pauric Mahony only returning for the last few matches. Bennett has racked up big totals, of 0-16, 0-15 and 0-14 in Division 1b.
The final few players that could make the recknowing are Jason Forde, Seamus Callanan and Oisin O’Rourke. Jason Forde was in the 5 championship scorers last year. He hit 3-39 last Summer. Again in the league Forde was notching up big scores he was superb in the win over Cork. It is likely he will be near the top of the pile again. Seamus Callanan is a player that can also make the scoring charts. He again could be put back on the frees for the Summer, he also comes up with a few goals so he is certainly one for the list. Oisin O’Rourke has been finding his form Mattie Kenny’s Dublin, the league campaign showed this O’Rourke was to the fore and I expect him to make his mark in the 2019 championship also.
